Getting Brexit doneJoe Pike, political correspondent

2020 was the year Boris Johnson took back control of the Brexit process, ending a period of parliamentary paralysis. With a newly-minted majority, he played hardball with the EU. A threat to break international law with the Internal Market Bill was condemned by five former prime ministers.

But after 11 months of tortuous negotiations, and some last-minute brinkmanship, Mr Johnson secured a deal.

And whilst opposition parties claim it is 'weak', 'dreadful' and a 'hard Tory Brexit', the PM delivered the resolution he promised at the election 12 months before: to 'Get Brexit Done'.

It was a rare victory, in an otherwise bruising year. Much criticised for his handling of the COVID crisis, Boris Johnson felt the effects of the virus first hand. Its challenges are far from over.

Adapting to a new relationship with the EU will be demanding, but the government's immediate priority remains the pandemic, and economic recovery.

As for Brexit, it may be years - even decades - before we truly understand its impact.
